The UM-SJTU Joint Institute (JI) is an equal-partner institution jointly sponsored by The University of Michigan (UM) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). It has been established to promote and facilitate mutually beneficial global higher education exchange and collaboration. The JI is being launched with high expectations and a strong commitment from both partner universities and the Chinese Government. It has been given a high degree of autonomy to model itself on world-class universities such as the University of Michigan.

The primary objective of the JI is to establish a world premier institution for innovative global education and research activities that will extend to various academic disciplines. The initial focus will be on various engineering disciplines and this will gradually expand to other non-engineering disciplines such as Medicine, Life Sciences, Pharmacology, Literature, Science, Environmental Studies, Arts, and Business studies.

Strategic Objectives:

To establish and practice a set of new educational models and management structures within the JI, by learning and adopting the best practices of UM.
To become an engineering-focused interdisciplinary research center that fosters pioneering leaders within various disciplines who are able to address the needs and challenges within the global arena.
To be an international higher education base and collaborator with other leading international universities.
Major Breakthroughs:

University Model: The JI will use the best educational and research practices of both the UM and SJTU. The adopted model should consequently be translatable and applicable to the entire SJTU.
Management Structure: Although the JI is now defined as an affiliate of UM and SJTU, it will operate as an independent institute to challenge the difficulties that currently reside within the management structures of Chinese universities.
International Collaboration Style: The hallmark of the JI will be its focus on excellence in collaborative research and collaboration with other research focused universities through its internationally respected faculty.
Academic Organizational Structure: The JI will focus more on interdisciplinary areas of interest to break down the boundaries between various schools and departments.
Education Program:

Approved by Chinese government in February 2006 and formally announced in April 2006, the JI has developed its strategic plan. In the next 5 years, it will reach an envisaged enrollment target of 2000 domestic students (with 1600 undergraduates, 300 masters and 100 PhD candidates) and 200 international students.

English is the official language of instruction and communication, making it accessible as an international education base for students worldwide. Many international educational programs like student exchanges, summer programs and internship opportunities are offered to partner universities as well as general international students. A recognized curriculum structure and course materials from UM will minimize the difficulty of credit transfers between the JI and its partner universities.

Faculty:

The establishment of a world-class faculty is the first critical step in fulfilling the strategic objectives of the JI. The standards for faculty hiring and promotion will be adopted from UM. In the next few years, it is anticipated that more than 50 full-time tenure track faculty positions will be filled and priority will be given to areas including alternative energy systems, advanced materials, environmental and water resource engineering, automotive and manufacturing engineering, wireless communication and pervasive computing, integrated micro-systems and design innovation.
